Microsoft support on Vmware

Last time (less than a month agao) I had an issue with Exchange on my Vmware host 4.0 and called Microsoft, I was told that vmware was not supported.
Is this real or just a tech guy who was not up to date?
The reason I am asking is I am thinking of virtualizing my Sql box too and would like to be able to get the support from Microsoft if needed.

Microsoft should indeed support it - ESX4 is on their list of approved Hypervisors for hosting Microsoft servers.

They definitely support vSphere 4.x - I just got support last week for Exchange 2010 on vSphere, they asked and I told them it was running on vmware, they said ok and away we went..
