Previously, you never saw the little task bar notification that were updates to install when the update was JUST Microsoft Security Essentials. Now all of a sudden for about a week, every day I get the task bar update notification and it's simply definition updates for M.S.E.

I didn't change any settings. Would like it to go back to just installing these updates without forcing me to interact.

IMHO, the simplest solution would be to run System Restore, find a restore point 1 or 2 weeks ago and restore your system back to this restore point.

It doesn't seem like it's a system error that needs correcting, but more like a feature that Microsoft has changed. I was looking to see if anyone else has noticed a change.

But maybe that feature came with an update 1-2 weeks ago. So if you restore your system to the point before the update then MSE will behave as before.
Btw, some years ago when I used windows at home I used MSE but soon I got my PC infected. Then I rather changed to Avira Free Antivirus which protected my system much better. Noawadays Kasparsky also supposedly offers free version, so there is a better choice to take something more reliable than MSE.
