I'm using Microsoft Outlook 2002 (not Outlook Express) and I downloaded an email with an .exe attachment. Outlook blocked the attachment and said it's a type level 1 attachment which is automatically blocked by Outlook because it could be dangerous. Is there a way to turn this off? I don't want Outlook deciding which messages I can or cannot look at.

Thanks for any help!

When you have outlook open, go to Tools->Options
Then go to the Security Tab, and in there, click on the Attachment Security button. There should then be an option to turn your security off or change the settings.

Please forgive if the directions are slightly off, Im using Outlook 2000 here and I cant remember if its the same in 2002. Shouldn't be too far off! Jay~

If the previous post doesn't work for you try reading the following article:

OL2002: Cannot Access Attachments [Q290497]

Previous version of Outlook don't have this issue unless the E-mail security update was installed.

If you installed Office 2k service pack 2 this could be your problem. There is a security patch on Outlook 2k that prevents executables (.exe .bat etc.) from being attachments.

The last I heard you need to un-install Office then re-install omitting service pack 2.

I believe this is true but you might want to check the Microsoft site.

much luck

Below is the link to the MS article. This is really the only way to override Outlook's security features.

Be careful. Make sure attachements are scanned by a good anti virus engine before you open them. Even stuff from known entities can be infected.

The two rules for success are:
1. Never tell them everything you know.

I went to the article mentioned in rjkrash's message and applied it and it worked perfectly -- I was able to open the attachment. Thanks to everyone for their help and especially to rjkrash for the article url!
