I built a test bed system for a potential (large) customer. They insisted on Win2000 so I installed Release Candidate 2. All hardware was picked from the HCL (White box system). Everything is working fine (hardware)and no application programs were installed. I attempted to install Office 2000 Pro. It would launch the "installer" and get as far as asking "default or Custom. " Immediately after that (no matter what you answered) you would a message "Installer has closed due to a failure." No error code is given. As a test I installed Office 97. No problem, works fine except no matter who is logged on it tells you that you allready have that file open and asks to make a copy. If you say no, it takes you into the application which proceeds to work fine.
Any ideas??
Yup. Wait until Feb 17th and get a full blown copy. Then call the MS helpline!
Sounds like it is missing a file. Did you do a custom install or was it a typical? Have you tried technet on line?

Did you check the log files for the Office2000 install? By default Office 2000 will create logfiles for the install. It sometimes varies in their location, but its usually located in temp, %windir%\temp or sometimes the root folder.

I think that its O2KInstall.txt. Depending on what you installed and where in the install you get there may be another logfile.

If you cannot find a logfile, you can edit the setup.ini file to specifically send the text file of a name you specify to whereever you'd like. You'll need to run setup.exe from the command line and specify a different ini file ("setup.exe settings=c:\temp\mysetup.ini"). At the bottom of the ini file is where you setup the logfiles.
Hope this helps,
Make sure you are using at least build 2128 of W2K. Get 2195 if you can find it. I am using O2K Pro on both of these builds without a problem installing or using.

Since O97 is experiencing some anomalies, I would assume there is an OS related issue and wouldn't focus all my efforts on why O2K won't install.

Viewing the install log for O2K my point you to a more specific area where the problem may lie.
