Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse and Win98SE

I am having problems getting a Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse to work on a Compaq Presario 1920 notebook computer with Windows 98SE. I can get the mouse pointer to work ok but not the scrolling part. I cannot find any new drivers etc on teh Microsoft site. Has anyone seen this before or got any suggestions.

Make sure you are running the latest version of Intellipoint drivers, and that you have the correct mouse type selected.

Hello Crisc, when I go to the MS site to download the intellipoint software, it says Notebook Optical Mouse is not supported!

Hmm. How unlike Microsoft to make drivers that are incompatible with their own stuff! ;]
Have you tried using the Windows Update feature (through Device Manager) to obtain MS drivers for this device?
Another thing to try while in Device Mgr is finding a setting in the Advanced tab called "Wheel Detection" and select the "assume wheel is present" option. I've had to do this on W2K pcs sometimes, but I'm not sure if this will be available on W98.
If that didn't work, I'd say go ahead and try the Intellipoint drivers anyway, just select a different kind of mouse when you are going through those 3 questions so it will let you download them. It doesn't matter which one you pick--you get the same file regardless, and when you run through the setup you have to reselect what kind of mouse you have anyway.

There was a recall on some microsoft optical mouse products. I remember seeing it. I think it was the 5 button optical mouse that had the problems not the simpler wheel optical mouse. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
