I have just inherited a system with 3 NT servers (which I can handle) and a Netware 4.1 Server (which is completly new to me).

The MS mailboxes are stored on the Novell server and I haven't got a clue as to how to get into it, to either find out what the mail service is or to add/amend users. The plan is to migrate from the Novell Server to NT in the near future. I have used the migration tool to do everything else, but I really need to manage the mail as well.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

As far as I remember there is a maildata and a mailexe directory. The Maildata directory contains the database. In the mailexe directory you should find a program called admin.exe, a dos-menu like program to manage the system and its users. You should either run the program from the maildata directory or you should have a drive mapped to it:
eg. MAP ROOT M:=SERVERNAME\VOLUME:\MSMAIL\MAILDATA

In the mailexe directory you will also find MAIL.EXE which is the client program. If you have MSMail 3.5 you should have a floppydisk with a windows based client on it.

It's not much info, but I hope this gets you on the right track.

hehe :D

Thanks for that. I'll let you know how I get on.

Looking at it now, I am not even sure it is MS Mail on there. I have looked at all of the loaded modules and none of them seem to tie in with what I would expect to see.

My assumption was based on the postoffice name (wgpoXXXX) and the variety of populate.msm files on the post office.

I have tried going in using nwadmin, but there is no linking from the users to a mailbox in there, which leads me to believe that the mail system is 3rd Party.

Is there anyway of finding out exactly what mail software is running on the Novell box? Outlook Clients are configured to use Microsoft Mail service to look at the postoffice, but I don't think that means it is defininatly MS Mail.

Much as I hate MS, I do miss my nice friendly GUI :)

MSMail does not use any NLM on the server. It is a simple directory structure, no task is running.
MSMail used external PC's running DOS to act as MTA or any Gateway. MSmail was never NDS aware, therefore you will never find any entry in NWAdmin. Have You got any MAILDATA directory on the server? Do you see any *.mmf files (message folder)?

There is no MAILDATA folder on there or .mmf files that I can see. There is a mmf folder, but that contains only a populate.msm file. I am getting more and more tempted to arrange 'a little accident' for this Novell box ;-).

Thanks for all your help so far.

You are an absolute star. Thank you. All I need now is the password for the admin user. Nevermind, it must be written on one of these scraps of paper.

Thanks again for your help

Toby
