Microsoft Excel is wating for another application to complete an OLE

I get the error Microsoft Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action. The error code number is 100408.

The excel spreadsheet is launched from an application that was written in VBA and is using an Access database, converted the DB to SQL and get the same messate. Excel and Access version is 2010 but the files are .xls format. Though we get the same error if we try it with Office 2003 as well. OS is both XP and Windows 7. It only happens when we run excel with this application and not when running excel standalone. The developer just blames the network but we get that problem even when no one else is on the network. Does anyone have any ideas.

File, Options, Advanced, and under General check Ignore other applications that use DDE.

Have you tried that option?
