Hi all,I was doing some xp updates today and noticed on the update site I have this Microsoft Capicom 2.1.0.2 showing up in the left column of the update site when I scanned for updates. What is this? and why is it there all of a sudden? Do I need it? how do I uninstall it if not? I don't know how it got there or what it is? Any help on this please? thankyou.

ok,thanks found this on my wife's computer, she has no idea how it got there, nor do I,can it be uninstalled?I don't have this on any of my own computers, and it was not on her's a few weeks ago.

Often, application installers load redistributable install packages along with its main application program and data set. Basically, the main app is coded to use all these third-party packages. I've run into different main app installs that will install multiple other packages to the computer (the record I've seen for a legitimate app is five).

Likely, something that is loaded onto her computer requires CAPICOM. Which means you will have to research to see what else was loaded along with other apps on the machine. The description from the website should give you a good pointer on what app installed on the machine with it.

It should have an uninstall entry in Add/Remove programs.

Capicom is downloadable via Windows Updates.

ok glenn9999,the only program,I can think of recently installed is Firefox,Thunderbird E-mail,and last but not least McAfee Virus Plus 2009.Then I went to do the windows updates and saw the capicom thing there in the left side of windows update,so I updated that to.Those are the latest program installs I can think of anyway. It won't hurt the system to have it installed and updated right? That's all I was concerned with. It's ok with me if it's there on her computer,I just didn't know if it was safe to be there,or weather it would cause a problem or not? Thanks.

It's not malware and it's from Microsoft. It won't hurt anything, other than the drive space it takes up to be running it.
