Microsoft Cals - how does it work

Hi can you tell me whether a windows cal is needed for every user to access a windows server in addition to an application cal such as exchange or sql cal.

For example is a windows cal needed for a user to access active directory and is a different windows cal needed in addition to an exchange cal for user to access exchange and is a windows cal needed in addition to a sql cal in order for a user to access sql.

Yes. You need 1 Windows CAL for each AD user. You need 1 Exchange CAL for each mailbox enabled user. And, in some versions of Exchange you may also need an enterprise CAL for some advanced features.

But don't ever take the work of someone from this forum when it comes to licensing. Take the time to check with MS Licensing to make sure you're legit.
