When Backup is run from the command line or from its icon the server egg times for about 30 secs and thats it.

The following is what I have found out
Server 2003 upto date on patch. Running on a HP server. Loads of free disk space and free ram
Restart the server
Run MS Backup
Server egg times 30 secs
Nothing opens
In task manager you can see:-
Ntbackup.exe running
Also at the same time svchost.exe starts running at 42 to 80 % CPU in task manager it shows as svchost.exe NETWORK SERVICE. I checked to see what this was doing and it's RPCSs.
If I then end the Ntbackup.exe all returns to normal.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Simon

Is there anything in the Event logs?

What sort of backup are you trying to do? File, Exchange system state, all?

Is the BU going to tape or drive?

Can you try to run a backup from the command line:

Also I saw that there was this on the MS knowledge base not exactly your problem tho but worth a read:

Don't suppose you've got 12 IP's on one NIC have you?
