Good morning,

I'm building a database in Access 2002 for a school project. I've seen the piece I want, but it was in an older version of Access, but even so I don't know how to build it. I know a bit about programming, so with a little help, I can do that.

I want to open my database and have a window or welcome screen pop up automatically that has some buttons on it that will lead my user to perform the tasks he needs...for example, a pre-built report for employee addresses or a form that allows user input to add records.

I don't know what this is called, so I can't find it in any reference books. So what I need to know is this:

1. What is the welcome screen called?
2. How do I build one?
3. How do I add buttons and program them to open the right tasks?
4. Is there a way to customize the appearance of this screen...and how?
5. How do I program a button to open a form that will allow user input that adds records to the tables? And can one form add data to more than one table?

Guess that's it for now.

Thanx for any help you can provide.
Arlene

Hi ArleneM,

I think that what you want is a 'switchboard form'. this can be created, by clicking on Tools>Database Utilities>Switchboard Manager. then follow the instructions, to fill in the text whet should appear in the switchboard form, and the actions that should be preformed (open form, or report...).

[If you like, you can create yourself a form with command buttons to call other forms/reports. later you set this form to be the main form]

Hi Ja,

Thanx for your post. I'll try it and let you know how it goes.

Personally, I would just build my own form from scratch and set it as the startup form (Tools --> Startup). The switchboard wizards are rather limited as to what you can do.

I would suggest you get a good Access book that includes programming and read through it to get the foundamentals.

If you want to actually read Access books as apposed to finding the info online, I can recommend the books by Sybex in the series, "Developer's Handbook"

Just choose whatever version of Access you'd prefer. The basics will be the same throughout. Of course, if you plan on keeping the book around for a while, I'd get the newest unless the cost difference isn't justifiable.

Also, another good site for tech books in general, including Access, etc, is Their prices on new books sometimes are better than used books on other sites, such as amazon and half.com, but not always.
