My OS is Windows 98SE.
When I open up Word 2000 the pc stops for about a minute and the same happens when I exit. After a while in Word the cursor starts to get 'sticky and jerky'. After exiting Word the pc runs slower.
I have more than 18GB of hard drive space and over 600MB of RAM.
Please help!

Hi

My first guess would be that you have too much RAM!

Windows 98 doesn't like it too much when you exceed 512 RAM, in fact you have to make alterations to your pagefile

My suggestion would be to have 512mb RAM or under and then test MS word, you can get detrimental effects when using too much RAM with Windows 98

I dont think that you would need 600 MB RAM in your PC to be honest, you can get away with much less and have a better performance

If my suggestion doesn't work you could try a detect and repair of MS Office or unninstall and then reinstall

Hope it helps

Jamie

delete (rename for safety) the Normal.dot file (hidden)., and reboot . A fresh new template will be created. (it tends to get corrupted)
Start > settings > folder options > view tab > "show all files" and UNtick " hide ext for known file types", to be able to find the file on the HDD

In Word > Options Disable it's built in AV / Macro module scan.

Do you run Up to date AV software?
Free online scanners faq760-3862
checked for Spyware using SpyBot and Adaware?

A simple fix may be to disable "fast find" in msconfig> start ups. It is an indexing tool used by Word.

Start>Run> type "msconfig" (without the quotes)
Choose the startup tab
uncheck "fast find" and anything else you dont want to run at start up.
Restart your computer.

Hi

To do a detect and repair in reply to your last post, you will need to inser the office CD and run the installer on the CD

You will get a menu with three options, one option will say "Repair" if you try a repair of office that may work

Thanks

Jamie

If you want to disable findfast crud you can do so in control panel >> findfast

If you dont see "fastfind" in start up. Go to control panel and you will find it there.

have you tried my first proposed fix? or atleast considered it? by renaming the file - windows won't find it, yet it enables you to save the original as a backup.
