Hi folks,

This seems to be the place on the Internet to chat about Micros PoS systems so here I am!

I picked up a Micros Workstation 5 (PN: 400814-001E) from a local electronics recycler. I'm not connected to the hospitality or restaurant industry at all but I thought it might be a fun machine to play around with (maybe make a jukebox interface with the touch screen). I was planning on installing Linux on it, probably using a buildroot created image as to make allowances for the slow CPU and low amount of RAM.

That all being said, the WS5's BIOS is quite an old version, G1020s and I can't seem to find a live link to a BIOS update on here or the Internet in general. I think Oracle might have locked that stuff behind a login as well.

Does anyone have a link to a newer BIOS for the WS5? I think I've seen versions G1025 and G1026 mentioned.

Thanks!

Here is a link to the latest WS5 bios.

This is a .exe and is designed to be run on the server which pushes updates to these POS devices.

Since you dont have a server you will need to do this manually.

1. Open the ClientOSUpdate(7.3.1.0).exe with a zip utility.

BIOS Update:
1. Open the BIOS folder and copy all the files (except the setup.dat) to the \cf\ folder on the device. You will need to transfer them there with a FAT32 formatted USB stick as far as i remember.
2. Reboot the device and it should automatically update the BIOS.
3. The Setup.dat file is just a setup file with installation instructions that the POS server uses to transfer and install files on the services. Since you are doing this manually you dont need to use it but you can open it with a text editor to have a look if you want.

OS Update. If you also want to update the WindowsCE operating system to the latest version you can do this. But since you are planning a linux install i doubt you do.
1. Open the DOC folder and copy the NK.bin file to \cf\ on the service/
2. Reboot the device and it will update the OS automatically.

You are also right, these files are behind an oracle paywall.

Thanks CathaIMF!

I didn't see the URL the first time I looked that over :)

Thanks to CathaIMF I'm now running G1025 on my WS5!

I didn't have a CF card so I ended up removing the BIOS flashchip and programming it with my MiniPro from another Linux box like so:

minipro -p "SST49LF008A@PLCC32" -w GRNBELT.BIN
