Micros Simphony, Pinpad open error, ISL Buffer overflow, comm issues on several PoS.

Hello everyone! Hope you're having a good week so far.

I have a plethora of issues plaguing me right now and I'm reaching out hoping someone(s) might be able to help. To give a little context:
I work at a large venue and recently jumped into the PoS role after our old IT left (having never worked with Micros before, just used them as a manager). In the last month I have been troubleshooting and setting up over 200 PoS and pinpad terminals. My brain is fried as I've gone down the rabbit hole of Micros/EMC and I'm quick running out of time. I still have much to learn, and I feel like some of the issues I'm facing might just be an easy fix I'm ignorant to. All of the documentation I've scoured is vague at best (starting to think it's a conspiracy, lol).
We are running an older version of Simphony 1.6, with Micros Kws270 & W5 terminals.

The top 3 errors I'm facing:
"Pinpad Open Error" - Recently installed over 100 vx820 wired terminals via rs232 cable (port b). A handful of them are giving a "Pinpad Open Error" when trying to send payment to the pinpad. We/Eigen are able to send handshake requests to the pinpad and verify it's connected. In most cases I've discerned it's not the rs cable or the physical comm port by testing Micros terminals with known working ones. Which has me think it's a setting I'm missing in EMC or the workstation. I can swap and re-cal a machine from our server to that same IP/workstation address, and it will have the same Pinpad Open error.

Printer comm issue (Failed to Print to X) - This is related to the above I'm sure. Our t88 printers connect via an rs232 cable like the pinpads do. (only port a). When troubleshooting "Pinpad Comm Error" (a different error than above), we were able to work around it by swapping the pinpad/printer from ports a/b, and rebooting the machine. Which means at one time that workstation's setting had the comm ports opposite. In regaining pinpad functionality, we lost printer functionality with the terminal no longer recognizing the printer. I would like to think I don't have a bunch of dead comm ports and that it's a setting in EMC or the workstation I need to find that changes them.

"ISL error on line 727, file buffer overflow" - This is an error that we saw many times last season and it's back. Strickly on the ws5 machines, it's a bit fleeting. It appears the moment you press the cc/debit button on the touchscreen. Unlike other pinpad errors on the kws270 machines that hang or bounce back after trying, this one seems to error the instant you press the button. It doesn't even try. Which I guess is the point of preventing the overflow. Having me believe it's a happening workstation-side and on the files/memory phsyically on the workstation. Curiously, when re-caling one of the ws5, this error disappeared only to be replaced by Pinpad Open Error. (lol). So I'm not sure if I solved the issue or just created a new one.


Any help or insight would be appreciated! I guess my first question is, does anybody have experience in changing RS comm port settings in EMC, that might be able to direct me where to find it?

Try swapping the cables on the devices where the printer does not work and the pin pad reports as open. Close any programs that you're using to troubleshoot before trying to connect with the POS software to the serial devices.
Serial (RS232) is very finicky. The system may tell you that the COM ports are the same, but the hardware may use a different chip for its' serial connections. Also double verify your port settings.
A good start would be to set the universal default of 9600 (baud) 8 (bits) N (parity) 1 (stop bits) and then go up in baud from there.
