Hi,
I am pretty new to Micros, and need some assistance, please! We have paid alot of money to Micros for tech support in the past. The system just got updated from micros today to protect customer cc information. We have updated some prices on our menu. And changed them in the system. Now, we would like to conquer "clean up" some old menu items that are no longer used out of the system. Also add hard key buttons on the food server screen (where appetizers, entrees, desserts are listed, not menu items, like the categories) I have been nominated to take on this task, I am wondering if there is a manual online or some websites with frequently asked questions for general use of the back office part of micros. I do know how to delete an item, but some items come with a error message. Since this system was install years ago, there hasnt really been anyone in the restaurant keeping info up to date or really managing the system. We have frequent crashes. Where the system needs to be restarted. Micros doesnt have anything listed on their website(duh... cuz they want you to pay for their high priced support) I would also really like to know what steps should be taken to protect the system and its database (daily, montly, etc) so we can have this system running smoothly again. With less crashes. I think the one gentlemen that came out once said the system should be rebooted daily? I thank you for your help.

Hi
The exact message I am getting when trying to delete menu items is:
Key Violation. [Sybase][ODBCdriver][Adaptive Server Anywhere][Integrity constrant violation]Primary key for Row in Table'mi_def' is General SQL error. referenced in another table.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

Hi Amy,

The error you're getting is a database relationship violation. It's most likely due to historical totals. You can't delete an item until all sales for it have been purged from the database.

Here's how to determine how long your totals are being held:
Open the POS Configurator.
Go to the Reporting tab, Historical Totals button.
Look at the Class Name for each Historical Total Definition that has Menu Item in the name. They may all be the same.
Click on the Classes tab.
Each class has a Number of Days History box. This is how long totals are held before they're purged.

To find out what items still have totals associated with them, run a consolidated system menu item sales report with a date range from 1/1/07 through today. (This can be pretty labor intensive and slow down your system, so do it when you're restaurant is closed just to be safe.) Menu items that show up on the report have totals and cannot be deleted.

As far as maintenance goes, what version & OS are you on, and what kind of server do you have? You should be backing up the database least once a day, and the logs and journals should be rotating and purging.

Normal windows maintenance should be done regularly, antivrus scans, scheduled defrags, etc... I have our stores reboot the server weekly. This is mainly to keep the time needed to reboot to a minimum. There's nothing worse than having to do a quick reboot and it takes 10 minutes to shut down because the last reboot was 3 months ago.

Hope that helps get you started.

Pat

Thank you for the information Pat, when I go back to the restaurant I will let you know what we are running. Just not sure what OS means, could you please tell me?
By Server, you mean the computer in the back of house, right? Sounds like I will be working a very long night very soon to do these steps you have given me. Like I said, there as been minimal maintenance done on the system. But it's a must and I guess I will be the one to do it. I hope I can count on you and others to see me through this horrible ordeal. Thank You So Much for taking your time to explain this to me, I sincerely do appreciate it:0)

Sorry about the delayed response. I was out of town for a few weeks and didn't have time to check the forums. Were you able to get everything straightened out?
