We had a Micros server go down for sevral hours in one of our stores. We got it back up by swapping memory. This happened during a busy time of day and it was a disaster with no backup. I did some research and found an option to enable standalone on the workstations. I selected the option for each workstation and then shut down the server to try it out. We were able to only get one terminal into standalone mode. The rest just booted to Windows and went no further. Is this normal or should they all go into standalone? I also noticed that any open tickets were missing in standalone mode and credit cards did not work. I am used to Aloha where this is not a problem. It will hold credit cards and authorize when he system is back up. Is there a way to have similar functionality in Micros?

I also found an option for backup server where I could choose one of the workstations to be the backup. What is the process for getting this going?

Any suggestions/help in this area would be greatly appreciated. We need to be able to run the restaurant in case of server failure.

Thanks

What kind of terminals do you have?

For stand alone mode, do you have this enabled for all workstations? How did you shut down the server? Have you tried testing stand alone mode by disconnecting the server from the network?

Hi,
in configurator go to Devices TAB, select WORKSTATIONS and then select OPTIONS TAB. Here you can say if they are allowed to go into standalone mode. You need to get familiar with your CC processing...

Mixture of PCWS and UWS. Standalone is enabled for all workstations. Tried disconnecting server from network. The server crashed again last night. Before that happened I went ahead and selected one of the terminals for backup server. It asked to be the backup but required a password. None of the manager logins would work. Is there a way around this?

Hi,
sounds like you may have bigger issues, maybe network. Micros is really stable, and things like setting up a backup server (which should be another independent & dedicated server) replicate all the data & transactions that are on the primary server. You should look at the server log and see the reason for the server failure.
%resrootdir%\etc\3700.log

What Micros version is it, how many clients (&type, i.e. 2 pcws, 4 ws) do you have, and server specs (RAM & processor speed) are all helpful in diagnosing problems, as well as size of database (micros.db) and amount of free space on HDD.

For basic networking reassurance, check the IP & names in configurator & against actual physical settings. Any discrepancies here should show up in your log.

If the DB needs rebuilding access Database Manager (start>run>DM) and select Update\Rebuild. This should eliminate any DB performance issues. So these steps should help you...

It crashed and then you swapped the memory and then it crashed again? it sounds like the motherboards is going bad.
