Micros 3700 CC Dial-up Back-up Not Working

Our Micros 3700 processes credit cards through the internet. It is supposed to revert to dial-up as a back-up processing method but twice recently we have found it not to be working. Obvious issues arise when guests want to pay their bill and leave! Is there anything we can do to troubleshoot on our own and try to solve before we have to call for tech support?
