Hi, currently I am working on a Dell issue. Windows 98 is installed, the microphone is connected properly and was tested on another machine to verify that it works. However, the sound recorder on the Dell indicates recording is taking place, although a "flatline" is shown....there are no issues with the volume either...does the microphone need to be "switched" on in some capacity. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Open up the speaker icon which will bring up your mixer panel. Change from playback to recording properties, then go into the advanced properties. There should be an option to enable a 20 db boost on the microphone gain. This helps with many microphones.

The other possibility is the microphone you're using has the wrong OHMS rating for the input on the sound system, and in that case it won't ever work correctly. A quality microphone, such as the Sony FPC30, will do wonders. It also has an on-off switch, and has feedback and echo prevention built-in.
