Microphone not working

I have a Sitecom modem, all seems to work fine, dials numbers, can hear the noise from the internal speaker and the headset, but I cannot send voice through the microphone.

The mic is connected to the mic slot on the modem, next to the speaker one.

Please help as I have run out of ideas

Would this microphone input have a slider volume control in Audio and Multimedia properties? There maybe options to mute this audio input or at least select which input to take when recording. Make sure the "select" box for the microphone is ticked and the slider is at an appropriate level. Verify the mike is working correctly by making a simple recording in Windows Sound Recorder.
