Hi,
I've searched the web on this and can't find any decent resolution. I have two PC's that run Vista. A Toshiba laptop and an HP desktop.

I installed Vista SP2 and on both PC's, my microphone is not detected when I plug it in. The built in microphone works, but not the plug in one. It's not a USB plug in, it's just a regular jack. I've uninstalled the Realtek drivers on both and updated them and even went back and installed the original drivers that came with the system.

Most people are saying it's not SP2, but it is. I have the volume turned up on the mics in the sound properties and have done everything I know to do.

If it is the same microphone not working on different computers, could it be that the microphone is faulty? Does your microphone work on any other persons machine?

Is your microphone listed as a disabled device in Recording Devices

Select sound from the control panel.
Select the recording tab.
Right click on the background of the tab and choose "show disabled devices.

Linny, the smart thing to do is to try the obvious first. It is indeed the microphone that's faulty.

The mic is on a headset that I just bought a couple of months ago and had no idea it would possibly be faulty. It's worked perfect up until the day I installed SP2. Also, I've looked on the web and Toshiba's forum page and other people have had the same problem.

When I installed SP2, my sound quit and I had to reinstall the original driver to get it to work, but Microsoft said that Realtek drivers are having problems with SP2.

When I plug the defective headset in, both PC's acknowledge that the microphone is plugged in, it just won't register sound. Is there anything that the computer could be storing about the particular headset? I mean, plug in jacks don't have drivers do they?

Oh well, I've got another headset with a mic, so I'm happy as heck. Thank you for replying. I may have gone so far as to reinstall the whole OS if you hadn't pointed that out :)

Thanks

I'm happy for you that you have solved your problem.

"plug in jacks don't have drivers do they?" Most onboard sound just have a jack for the microphone with a symbol of the microphone on it. You plug it in, make sure the microphone setting is correct, and that is about it.

Some of the individual cards let you swap "jacks" around via sound manager programs.
