I recently bought a Compaq CQ50Z. I downgraded from the default installed Vista to Windows XP Professional.

I used the instructions and drivers from these two sites:

and I read through this thread:

and all of the drivers are installed.
Device manager shows no unknown devices.

But the built-in microphone (part of the webcam?)
doesn't work. The Windows Sound mixer shows Line-In
and Microphone, but neither of those records any sounds.
The laptop only has a mic port, so I thought maybe
Line-In would help, but it doesn't.

Run DXdiag from the Start Run Box and in DXdiag test your Microphone via Network/ DirectPlay Voice. and run the Wizard.

See if you can get any clues as to why your microphone is not working from the Troubleshooting Wizard on the same page.

DirectX: Description of the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

Keep an eye on that thread you originally posted in too.

Mic problems in XP

linney:

Ran the wizard as you suggested.
Full Duplex Sound Test: Passed
Half Duplex Sound Test: Passed
Mic Test: Failed gracefully

When I click Troubleshoot... a box comes up:

"The wizard tests your sound hardware and records the test results. Clearing the test results will cause the wizard to reevaluate your hardware which may help in some cases. Would you like to clear the test results from the DirectPlay Voice Wizard?"

If I click Yes, it just clears them and doesn't
troubleshoot. If I click No, another box comes up:

"Bypassing the wizard entirely might help in some rare cases if they wizard fails. Would you like to bypass the wizard and pretend that the hardware tests passed successfully?"

If I click Yes, it makes all tests say Passed and
testing the mic in Sound Recorder yields no input.
If I click No, a box comes up saying:

"This troubleshooter is unable to solve your problem.

This troubleshooter is unable to solve your problem."

That just refers to me, obviously, so try Ben's link, maybe that troubleshooter (Ben) will be able to solve it, after all he is our resident driver expert.

BigBadBen:

The link to download the driver on the page you gave
doesn't work. However, I think I already have the
same driver (Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221), using
driver file "WiSVHe5.inf".

Did this microphone work in Vista, maybe it is faulty? Is it possible for you to connect an external microphone and test with that?

The mic worked when I had Vista installed, yes.

I hooked up an external mic and it works too.

I tried DriverAgent, but it doesn't tell me what driver
I need, it just gives me a download link which requires
me to purchase a year's worth of DriverAgent downloads.

Oh yeah, the two drivers that DriverAgent said
were not correct were:

HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
NVIDIA HDMI Audio Device

Also, I'm running XP SP2. I'm thinking maybe SP3
might fix it, but I'm not that hopeful.

No, when I click it just brings me to the register page.

And I just tried that NVIDIA HDMI Audio Driver from the link you posted, and it still doesn't work.

Paulie, since you have downloaded the driver already, open the WiSVHe5.inf file and change the following section:

Code:
[Conexant]
%HdAudioFunctionDriver.Hermosa5051.DeviceDesc% = HdAudModel,HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5051&SUBSYS_103C30CD
%HdAudioFunctionDriver.Hermosa5051.DeviceDesc% = HdAudModel,HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5051&SUBSYS_103C30D6

to:
Code:
[Conexant]
%HdAudioFunctionDriver.Hermosa5051.DeviceDesc% = HdAudModel,HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5051
%HdAudioFunctionDriver.Hermosa5051.DeviceDesc% = HdAudModel,HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5051&SUBSYS_103C30D6

notice: the removal of the SUBSYS section...

close notepad and accept the changes and save...

then try again to install...

Ben

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.

Calling HP to see if they have specific XP drivers
or at least a model number or something for the
mic or webcam&mic.

So I contacted HP. Limited help because I'm using XP
and it came with Vista.

The guy told me that the mic should work with the sound
card driver (nothing to do with the webcam) and that the
Vista driver makes it work just fine.

So I went to the HP support page and downloaded the
Vista driver:

Installed it, and though it shows up fine on device
manager, it is not an option in my Sounds and Audio
Devices control panel. All it lists is NVIDIA HDMI
Audio Device under output, and nothing under input.

Is there a way to change the Vista driver to make it
into an XP driver?

I'm giving some consideration to putting Vista back on.
I keep scouring the web and trying driver after driver,
swapping my SUBSYS in for the one listed, etc
and it just seems like a compatible XP driver doesn't exist.

I had a couple issues with Vista, but it also had
a couple things I liked. Right now I can use an external
mic, but I don't feel like bringing that around
everywhere I go. Decisions, decisions.

Save an image of your current XP partition in case you want to return to that.

You could have the best (and worst) of both worlds if you went for a dual boot setup.

Anyway we will be all looking out for your next thread, along the lines of "Where to I get Vista drivers for....?" (lol).
