Practical Visual C++ by Jon Bates and a second guy is a very good book for MFC beginners. I've recommended it to several people, and they've all liked it.
I purchased Sams Teach Yourself Visual C++ 6 in 21 Days. I've learned more about programming MFC from that book in 1 day than I did trying to make sense out of Microsoft's MSDN files in 2 months. Of course, now all of Microsoft's tutorials make a lot more sense, but all they do is tell you HOW...they don't explain WHY. It's hard to learn what to do without knowing when to apply it.
