Some VP is using a metric of quantity of late completed pieces.

This means that a late completion for 100 50 cent washers is 100 times worse than one late 50,000 dollar transmission.

Here's what happens.

1. Manpower is expended answering questions related to these late completions. (Work to generate & answer the metric)

2. Manpower is expended trying to jimmy the system, not fix the source of the lateness. (Work to get the metric looking good)

3. Uncompleted orders that are already late, are neglected in order to work on the large quantity orders with near term completion dates. (The metric does not encourage completing something you've alredy been dunned for)

What good/bad metrics have you experienced in your business?

A better metric might be a measure of completion to schedule with weight on lateness and value. So 100 50 cent washers 100 days late might have much less impact than a 50,000 dollar transmission 10 days late.

Couldn't agree more. Unless a dollar (pound, mark, yen, sea shells, leaves) value is placed on it, the metric is worse than useless.

Lines of code produced.

One of the STUPIDEST metrics of all time. I can produced hundreds of lines of useless code (and comments) or I can produced a dozen lines of really good code. Which is more valuable? How do you put a price on it?

Some languages require more lines of code to accomplish the same task than others.
