I am currently looking through the threads trying to figure out how to best setup a network printer (hp laserjet 1100 or 1300) connected via a print server (netgear ps101). I was told that the OS version was SCO Openserver 5.4.3 but will check with uname -x once onsite. I checked netgear site and they say to setup the printer as LPD printer. I want to have as much information as possible prior to going onsite and attempting this task. Do I add the printer into /etc/hosts then use scoadmin to add the printer. Do I only need to use scoadmin printer in order to add the printer? I see alot of comments on the printcap file. Is this auto created? Would I be best off adding the printer into /etc/hosts then using rlpconf? I'm a bit confuzed which is the correct method for the equipment I have. Can anyone give me some basic step by step instructions on how to set this up or point me to a already made thread? Thanks in advance :)

point me to a already made thread?
Do a keyword search in this forum for rlpconf
You may also do another keyword search for netgear

Hope This Helps, PH.

So I guess I was right then if the netgear requires LPD printing then I should add to the /etc/hosts then edit the printcap file? No need for rlpconf at all? Or in the latest version of Openserver will rlpconf be all that I need? Or since it is the latest maybe all I need is to use the GUI of scoadmin printer?

Oh and btw searching for rlpconf and netgear brings up this thread and no others. I'll just keep browsing with scoadmin printer and rlpconf alone and see what I come up with. I haven't seen that many posts regarding netgear print servers, especially the PS101 :( I should just have the person buy HP JetDirect 170's and use the GUI for HP print manager. This seems to be the best print server around in my eyes at least... What do you think?

I suggested two different search, one for rlpconf, and another one for netgear.

Aye did that and am coming up with alot more results. It looks like all I need is rlpconf and maybe to edit the printcap file once running the rlpconf script. Am I on the right track? Thanks a ton for your quick replies, I am going out there very soon and just want to make sure I have all the documentation that I will need. I'm not too sure if there is a phone line out there yet so I can view the web to do research onsite.

I read this from another post, is this all that I need to do?

You have to know if the PrintServer embedded in your network printer supports LPR/LPD protocol, and then the name of the job queue.
Next step is to create remote printer with scoadmin:
Host=Name of the printer in /etc/hosts
Printer=Name of the queue
You have to uncheck the Use extending protocol option
Hope This Help

Yes, this is the GUI equivalent of rlpconf.

Great so I am on the right track. I didn't want to use the GUI if it didn't edit the printcap file entries automatically. It's nice to know that I can use either rlpconf or scoadmin printer and do the same job. I am aware that I may still need to edit the printcap file with the mx:0 option and will need to check /etc/hosts to see if it was created correctly. Thanks a ton for your very quick replies. I will keep you posted :)

Well after playing around with both rlpconf and the GUI I found neither of these would work. I checked the hosts and printcap file and it was placing the entries after running the programs but the printer would not print correctly. There was a huge delay on print jobs (ie over 2 minutes at least). I removed the entries and then used HP Print Manager. I was able to get the printer up and running with the first try. Thanks for the help though :)
