Metastat & Resynching

I've a Solaris box with Disksuite mirrors (metadevices) & all seems to be running OK.
However, last week I installed an add-on module to our monitor (Big Brother - that uses the metastat command to check on the mirrors.
Shortly after starting the monitor up, it showed that 3 metadevices were resyncing. There were no msgs in /var/adm/messages & the resyncs did complete OK. There's now been another resyncing episode.

So, now I'm left wondering, is it just a coincidence that I got the test working the day before this error occurred (I don't believe in coincidences!), or has good old BB picked up on an on-going problem?

If so, then that's one more pat on the back for BB & one more problem for me to fix :-(

Does anyone have any experience of transient resyncs and/or is there any more information I can get to find out if it's serious or not? TandA

Anytime the system is rebooted metasync run (etc/rc2.d/S95SUNWmd.sync on sol-2.6 or S95lvm.sync on sol 8. If you rebooted after loadin Big Bro then that is where the resync occurred.

Thanks, but no, the system hasn't been rebooted - uptime is 26 days. The resyncs are happening "on the fly". TandA

Hi,
Is the resyncing occuring only when BB is running or otherwise also?If it is only occuring in BB then see the configuration file for BB and find out whether 'metasync' command is running.Otherwise check the status for metadevice using 'metastat' from command line prompt and find out any discrepencies.....

All that BB does is issue a metastat every 5 minutes & parses the output for various conditions. It doesn't issue a metasync at all. The 1st time it picked up an error condition I was able to issue the metastat command myself & saw that 3 mirrors were resyncing. The 2nd time happened at the weekend.

It's my assumption that the BB monitor just happened to pick up an on-going, intermittent problem & I'm really wanting to know if anyone else has experienced metadevices resyncing for no apparent reason. If so, how've you gone about investigating it?

TIA TandA
