Environment. Windows 2000 server
User: quite new to Citrix
In short:
If I log onto a desktop from an ICA client all applications are quick to run from the server,
If I try to start the same applications as published applications from Metaframe a simple Filemaker pro application or an empty excel spreadsheet takes more than 15 seconds to load.

Any ideas, anyone..?

When you start the desktop and then start apps you already have a connected session and things run smoothly. However when you first start an application from the program neighborhood you have to setup a session which means: connecting to Master browser, validating and then being reconnected to the propper apps server. This can take several seconds. If you also have antivirus on your client active it can take a long time before you are connected. Try to disable the virusscanner to see if things speed up. Also you can lack performance because your connectionline (eg. modem or single ISDN line) hasn't got enough bandwith.

A easy thing to check is if the NIC is set at full mode speed, no auto detection.
Full duplex 100Mbit/s.
Otherwise there will be a negotioation about speed on most connections to the server.

Try to add some more ICA idle listeners to pick upp connections.

I have to check that out...thanx

...yes, There is alot going on when you start a published application, but...the delays im talking about are unacceptable...It has to be something else.

We are just testing the system with less than 10 simultaneous users. The hardware we have right now is intended for 50 simultaneous users. Or more.

chjcomit has a good point, but you need to tweak it to your environment. Auto detect on cards and switches has caused problems in the past. Manually set the duplex and speed settings, but set them so they match where they are connecting to. Don't just automatically force it to full duplex 100MB, check your switch or other devices and see what they are set at.

The problems with performance with duplex and speed settings are caused by the mismatch that can occur with auto. I would force everything. If you want something done right, do it yourself, don't trust auto negatiation.

Hi!

There are more "basic" tuning tips look after in your environment of Metaframe servers.

More to check:

-Disable all unused services on the applications servers, most likely you have a whole bunch to switch to "disable".

-System Properties, Advanced Tab, Performance Options (optimize for background services).

-Network and Dial-up Connections -> File and Print Sharing, LAN connection properties, Maximize throughput for network Applications

Look into how your pagefile is configured, "best" is to keep it 1.5 - 3 times the size of physical RAM. The optimum solution (but most expensive) is to place it on another physical disk than the OS and published apps, this makes reads and writes parallell from the disk heads when accessing apps/files.

Check how the users profiles are configured, lots of good tweaks can be done with Group policy editor (Start menu - run then type "gpedit.msc")

JUST KEEP TRACK OF WHAT YOU'VE DONE AND TEST, TEST, TEST so nothing unwanted occurs...

And most likely the applications that you publish act in a special way, therefore it is hard to give specific tweaks, you gotta have/get a feeling for how they act with your network and after that tune the servers up!

Keep tewaking!

is a great site
