metadevice ufsdump

when doing ufsdump 0u /dev/rmt/0 /dev/md/dsk/d1 where d1 is name of metadevice it always gives errors. I have also tried ufsdump 0u /dev/rmt/0 /<dir> where dir is name of directory where vfstab loads the metadevices. I can ls all files in the dir so I know it's being loaded correcly at boot. Cannot find much help for backups of metadevices.
Now using tar which works fine. But everthing else is ufsdump..
