I had a hard drive crash last month and was able to get it up and going. Yesterday I got the "blue screen of death" when shutting down. I ran some diags and got an index and Metadata File Record Error. I searched Google with no luck and thought I'd ask if anyone can give me some information on how to fix it.

I am running Windows XP Pro using NTFS.

Thanks in advance for any and all comments.

We arent ignoring you, for my part i dont recall having the issue you are talking about.
However, since you dont have any other takers i will give it a try anyway.
When i have problems with hard drives that i cant fix, i go to the hard drive mfgrs website and download their diagnostics program and inside that program you will find the command to write zeroes to the hard drive. Do that and then reformat your hard drive and all should be well. If your hard drive mfgr doesnt have a program then i believe maxtors will work for most hard drives.

Thanks for your response. This is certainly an option, but for now, I would like to understand the issue better. It is not crashing regularly, maybe I can try a less drastic solution. I don't seem to be losing data. Are their any diags, beside CHKDSK, that check the drive Master File Table (MST)? CHLDSK is coming up blank.

Thanks again.
