Is the meta tags in websites still a valid way to optimize search engine hits? I tried googling on this, and some say that everyone just puts in in-correct keys in their meta tags (tons of keywords); so major search engines just ignores them.

If this is not true, and the meta keyword tag does work for major SEs (google and yahoo mainly), then is case sensitivity an issue in the meta tags ?
so do i need different entries for say USA, usa, Usa, UsA, and so on?

Thanks!

I still populate the meta description and meta keyword tags for my sites. The description one seems to be used by google.

I don't imagine case sensitivity is an issue for the major search engines... so I wouldn't bother attempting different case variations - it will most likely be considered key spamming anyway :)

Cheers,
Jeff

I don't know about Keyword tags, but my understanding is that some SEs will display the contents of the Description tag in the search results page, immediately below the Title.

If that's true, it would make sense to make your descriptions as informative and persuasive as possible, since this will affect the user's decision to click through to the site.

As for case sensitivity, I believe Alta Vista used to have a rule: if the search term was entered in all lower case the search would be case insensitive; if there was one or more capital letter in the term, the entire term would be treated as case sensitive. Fortunately, this silly rule seems to have fallen into disuse.

Hi

Thanks for the info about the AltaVista search, Mike, I did not know that.

But I would not call that silly, although indeed is not suitable for web. Is usefull for simple interfaces, when the search string is entered in the status line, like the WordPerfect editor or the [tt]less[/tt] command.

No, the meta keywords has long since been useless for SEO

All the major SEs are case insensitive for search phrases

I wouldn't worry about AltaVista it ceased to be a well used engine long before Yahoo owned it
