Messenger 5.0 on tosh. Had no problems signing in from LAN until last week when a long running problem with dodgy dial-up was resolved.
Now I can dial-up from the pc and Messenger signs in ok, but when back on the LAN, Messenger now only ever says there may be a problem with my connection or proxy server. However, IE (6.0) connects without any grumbling and needed no encouragement or change after the dial-up surgery. Under connection the auto doesn't do it and on manual tried all the permutations with the HTTP proxy and SOCKS4/5 mean nothing to me and I can't see any setup detail on the server relating to SOCKS.
To get dial-up working had to uninstall and edit winsock2 out of registry then re-install dial-up and VPN.
Any Messenger experts with any clues?
