Hey all,

I'm setting up an FTP server. I created a group, setup NTFS permissions so only that group has permission to the FTP folder, put a user in that group and she can't access the FTP folder. Here's what pops up in the System Log:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSFTPSVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 13
Date: 1/23/2009
Time: 3:52:34 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SRV-UTILITY
Description:
User Domain\User failed to log on, could not access the home directory /.

Out of curiosity I tried it with my account and I was able to get in. To condense this down, the group DOES have NTFS permissions but people in the group can't get in. I'm NOT in the group but I CAN get in. Oh, Anonymous doesn't have access to the folder either. I've quadruple checked NTFS permissions on the folder and FTP properties in IIS. Is there another place where Rights and Permissions are setup for FTP?

Hmmm... I just tried accessing the FTP server so I could get the exact verbiage of the error message and I got in with that user's credentials. I can still get in too even though I DON'T have permission That I can see. What's up with all of this????

Thanks,

Joe B

It is possible the user needed to log off her computer and log back on for the group membership to take effect. I am not sure that the FTP login attempts would actually recognize her in that group until this was done.

I used MS/IIS FTP for a while, until I discovered that FileZilla server was way easier to manage. I don't think it integrates with AD, but that's OK by me, it's still way better IMHO, plus it is open source and free.
