Hello

One of my solaris 7 system has stopped writing any message in /var/log/syslog file since two months.

I /etc/syslog.conf file with other systems with same configuration (E4500). It is correct. syslogd is also running. I tried /etc/init.d stop and /etc/init.d start also but still problem remains same. I have also noticed that sometime it stops writing messages in /var/adm/messages file after displaying /dev/sysmsg I/O error.

Any suggestion please

Thanx

Sharad

Probably stating the obvious, but ...

Is the /var/log or /var/adm, or /var file system(s) full?

If so, this would be a problem!

No sir

/var file system carry sufficient free space (600MB)

Thanx

Sharad

Does the "/dev/sysmsg I/O error." message give any details? Could it be a problem with the disk that /var is on? If so, time to call on your maintenance contrace :(

Hey,
Try giving the following command to see if logging is working or not:
logger -p user.err "test message"
After that check the file /var/adm/messages for the message.
And reply back whatever the result be.

Hello

thank you very much for your responses.

In the mean time, it is noticed that it was writing all
messages in /var/adm/messages file correctly after system
reboot. But it is not writing it in /var/log/syslog file.

Same thing has happened with logger -p command.

The message appeared in messages file but not in syslog.

I know I am not loosing much by missing it. But real question is why it is not happening.

Thanx

Sharad

Hi,
There is a file syslog.conf in /etc.This file is the configuration file for syslog messages.See if there is an entry for /var/log/syslog.If the entry is missing then u probably have found the solution for u'r problem.
I hope u found this helpful.
