Does anyone know what determines when a new messages file is created under /var/adm

For instance I have a messages file which is say 1 MB
and a messages.0 file which is 800kb and a messages.1 file that is 1.2Mb in size. Since the size is different I know it is not determined by size. I have also tried powering off and on then booting the system and that does not seem to create a new messages file.

This is a question someone in my class has asked so I would like to give them an answer.

Thanks

They are rotated every Sunday morning by this cron job in root's crontab:

[tt]10 3 * * 0 /usr/lib/newsyslog[/tt]
