Have an Octel250 that has suffered a drive 2 failure.
Users are complaining that they have a message light on but attempting retrieval they get a message "can't retrieve the message" and the light cannot extinguish. we are replacing the drive, but in the meantime is there something that can be done to clear the lights? I am thinking they must have had a message waiting on the now dead drive and the system is still attempting to alert them. If we leave a new message can they retrieve that and get rid of the MW lamps?

Thanks Kevin

What kind of PBX? I know on the Nortel you can turn the lights on\off manually using MIK and MCK keys on a set

You can update the MEW/MWI status on most PBX by commands.
This has to be done after a problems like yours.
I know that this is possible on Alcatel, Nortel, Ericsson/Aastra and Siemens.

If it is a 250 you will never get the lights right until you replace the drive and then i would send all users a message using a distro list on the system.

Ken,
So after replacing the drive and following the procedures for garbage collect you think that won't be enough?

Send a message to all users and as they delete that should help to straighten pointers out?

Thanks

The garbage collect will stop the error messages that the users are hearing but it will not turn the lights out or send the command to do so. It depends on the type of PBX as to what to do next to get the lights right

This is attached to a Nortel Option 11 w/DSE integration.

In reading through the drive replacement procedure it has you run garbage collect on the drive to be replaced, followed by the disk replacement option. In that option they are prompting you to answer Yes to copying messages from old drive to new drive. I am pretty sure that will fail as this drive doesn't spin up. Is the system smart enough to step you through this replacement with the garbage collect, and replacement processes and calculate the desired end game properly? It states its going to be looking for drive serial numbers as well. If it can't determine serial numbers how hosed will this get?

If you have never done this before you should get someone on the line that has. You can do a drive replacement without trying to copy messages. You may want to try it just in case.
