Is there a time between the application processing a command, applying all various UDP/IP, Ethernet headers etc and actually passing it to the physical port for transmission.

I have been told of some sort of loading delay, could this be linked to buffering before packets are sent?

does anybody know of any good sources to read up on this subject??

Sorry this is a bit vague but Google searches don't seem to be helping.

i am unsure I understand the question (and I know I do not have an answer) but lets follow this.

Application program may load a packet in it's buffers and then pass all of the packet to the OS

The OS has packet buffers to use to load the packet to the NIC Buffers (perhaps after checksums) these vary from 8 k to 64 k in my experience

The NIC has RAM to buffer packets both inbound and outbound, it may also need to do error prevention/detection. then it serializes the packet down the wire.

Your question is how long may all this take?
I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
