our CRM is sending out messages with a Message-ID
similar to this one:
"Message-ID: <2002624_@TLM5670892_@TLM>"
Now.. from what I read on the RFC this is incorrect..
can anyone help me understand how this could have broken
deliveries the someone? I have someone claiming this
prevented him from getting messages to us.. I do not
see how this could have caused it.. can anyone provide
any insight or ammunition to this problem?
I do not have the ability to change how the CRM sends
messages.. nor has anyone else had a problem or brought this
to my attention in the past.. the fact that I recieved the message tells me that qmail does not care about it. and I consider qmail to be one of the "more correct" MTA's.
Thanks
Nick

For the acronymically challenged:
CRM is "customer resource manager", right?

From the fact that you posted this to the qmail forum, the CRM app is sending out email through qmail. Is this correct?

And the message id of emails qmail is sending does not conform to an RFC. By the way, which RFC defines the format of an SMTP message id?

CRM = Customer Resource manager.

Yes the CRM uses our qmail server as it's outgoing
SMTP server..

the message-id is generated by the client sending the msg's
not qmail. and the SMTP rfc is located at :

section 3.6.4 I belive talks about the msg id's

I just don't get how this could cause problems.

It shouldn't. As RFC 2822 states, message ids are optional but encouraged.

I infer that he is able to receive the emails your CRM sends out, but is unable to reply, right?

I guess at this point my standard question are:
How did the customer's mail client misbehave? Were there error messages generated?

Have you looked at the exact headers of the email the customer receives? ______________________________________________________________________

I just need to know if ANY MTA anyone
has every heard of will block messages with a invalid message-ID

thank you.

I'm not convinced yet that the message IDs are doing it. There could be some other strangeness in the SMTP headers that could be causing the problem. ______________________________________________________________________
Don't say thanks. Just award stars.
