An error message flashes on and off the screen so quickly that I can not read it. After the memory check, and before going to the screen that lets me choose whether to boot in Windows 2000 or Windows 98, I see it briefly followed by a short beep. It says something about Event log messages, but it goes away too quickly for me to read it.

The list of operating systems and boot up time can be delayed by adjusting the time (seconds) in System Properties.
Right click on My Computer.
Choose Properties. Click on the Advanced tab at the top right.
Click on the Startup and Recovery radio button at the bottom.
You can adjust the amount of time the list of Operating Systems are displayed.
If you would like to suspend the boot process to see error messages, simply press the Pause/Break key on your keyboard.
This will suspend the boot process.
To continue booting - press the Enter key.

Yes, I am trying to slow down or suspend the boot process. I have previously pried the Pause-Break key but the whole thing happens so fast that by the time I press it, the message has gone away.

Try pressing F8 during the boot and then selecting the BOOTLOG.TXT generation option. Once the boot is complete you can look at this file in the root directory of your boot drive and and see every action that occured during the boot.
