Message Attachment Received as Machine Code

When sending files as email attachments (ZIP, DOC, EXE, etc.) both the recipient and the confirmation copy arrive with the attached file(s) display inline as alpha/numeric hash instead of an attachment (icon) to be saved or opened.
Using NC 4.78 in Win98 SE on Athlon; plenty of resources.
Files sent successfully in the past in 4.76 & 4.77.
