Message appears to resend on Exchange 5.5 sp3 server

How can i stop a message resending itself again and again?

There are no outstanding entrie in the IMS queue or in the MTA queue?

The original message was sent to a large number of external users (>1000).

Any ideas as to why this happened or how to stop the message resending?

Once your queues empty out you can stop the MTA and then delete all the files in MTADATA and then copy them from the Exchange Server. Restart the MTA and this message will be gone. This was fixed in Service Pack 3. I had this problem a while back.
