Quick question. I have a Merlin phone system but how do I tell what version it is?

From any phone on the system that has a display, grab an intercom dial-tone, then press *05 and it will give you the release in the display.
From any system display phone: press Speaker or go offhook with the handset and key *05. The display will show software version for the system.

*01 Test Tone: enter 1 for 1kHz or 2 for 3kHz

*03 Test Trunk Access: maintenance pw + logical trunk number (01 - 80)
*04 TouchTone™ Receiver Test: xx rec # + 123456789*0#, good = 3 beeps
*05 Software Version Display (display sets only!)
*06 not assigned
*07 not assigned
*08 ?
*09 MFM Test: Ringback & 1kHz tone burst (see mtce manual for sequence)
