Is there a touchtone gate on a merlin messaging? The operator is experiencing "phantom calls" where no one is on the other end. I changed the call answer service operator and the phantom calls moved with it, so I'm thinking that callers are leaving vmail, hanging up, but the call is still transfering.

Check to make sure that "Reliable Disconnect" is set to "Yes".

Actually, that was the first thing I checked. Thanks

I have one customer down south - who constantly get phantom rings - and it is a local Telco issue. Apparently the phone company has run out of adequate cables and are using some sort of multi-plexing technique to be able to add additional phones lines to the building this customer is located in - problem is that this multiplexing scheme causes frequent phantom rings with noone there if you answer. And - there is nothing I can do on the switch end to fix the problem.

I would set my VOICE MAIL TRANSFER RETURN out a few more rings.

This can be an issue even when you have "Reliable Disconnect" active and you do receive it from the provider or receive it in a timely manner. I have had experience on GTD5 switches in California, where the customer has CENTRANET lines. This is in GT/Verizon areas only.

What happens is the caller hangs up, but the disconnect supervision is not sent for about 45 seconds. During that time the Messaging or Mail is "processing" the call or sending it to CASO on timeout way before the 45 seconds. Hence the "no one there" syndrome or "dead air" or even the dialtone timeout recording to the howler before Permanent Bridge.

I tested this at length and discussed it with serveral folks and found it unique to CENTRANET on GTD5 only. The only solution is changing the lines to Ground-Start or other type of service other than CENTRANET. GT/Verizon was NO help what so ever!!

Hope this helps!
