Our company has a Merlin Messaging R2.5 board and I always try to have spare parts around in case anything fails. I was able to find a used spare hard drive on eBay that is a R2 hard drive.

Would this be compatible with the rest of the electronics in my R2.5 board? If the existing hard drive fails I'd like to be able to swap it out with my R2 hard drive and restore my backed up configuration.

Is this making things too simplistic? Or do I need to purchase an entire R2.5 and keep in on-hand?

You won't be able to restore a 2.5 backup into a 2.0 drive, but you're on the right track as far as sourcing replacements parts.

Yeah. That makes sense about restoring the backup not working between revision levels. It's just that I have the port licensing PCMCIA card and just wanted to avoid purchasing other spare items I don't need. Most of the used items I came across included a 4, 6, etc. port licensing PCMCIA card. All I need is the board itself, or maybe just a spare hard drive.

Here's a scenario. What if the hard drive dies on my R2.5 board and I did swap it out with the R2 one? Even if I couldn't restore the backup I assume I could download the R2 admin utility and manually recreate the voice mailboxes, correct?

In that case my $60 hard drive is pretty cost effective. Maybe not time effective, but it's tough to squeeze another grand out of my budget right now :)

You really need a hard drive that matches the software version of your Merlin Messaging (R2.5).

The effects of using an R2 hard drive on an R2.5 messaging may bring you unexpected and unwanted results.

If you do a full backup - periodically to your laptop - you would be able to restore all programming and mailbox contents to the replacement drive.
