I have a customer with a Merlin Legend cabinet and power supplies, with Magix release 1.0 processor and a merlin messaging.

Maybe once a month the call me and tell me the voice mail is down. The whole voice mail is erased/defaulted. So, I'll go and restore it and they're back working. This last time, the the restore was missing.

I changed the voice mail and it's not the battery. I think their old vendor maybe going in there and doing this. He used to work for Lucent and now is on his own. He doesn't go in the system though. Is there anyway I can change the back door password? What do I do? Or is there something else doing this?

Thanks,

The BACKDOOR password was default for Releases 1 thru 2.5, with a slight change in R3.0.

Certainly, and sadly, those were comprimised in several places, even on this forum.

With 4.0, no one knows it, except Avaya.

This was done for the very reason you mention, some crook hacking into the system caused problems.

That is so unethical, not to mention CRIMINAL.

I would love to catch someone and turn them in for such a low life and illegal act.

That being said, unless Avaya has some type of patch, (Which I doubt) you would have to get an R4 to have that type of protection to the back door.

Are you sure it's not the battery? There really is no battery - but a capacitor that retains memory for a few days. It's a Tolkin capacitor that may need to be checked to see if it's retaining a charge. They are supposed to last a long time, but a Merlin Messaging R1.0 is pretty old - so maybe it's the problem. If it's not retaining a charge, it will wipe everything out as soon as there is even a minor power fluctuation - which in a lot of places happens quite often. I would check it out - just in case.

I have swapped the voice mail out for a newer release already. That battery is good. i just wish there was a way to block this. Unless there's something else going on? Is there an access log on the voice mail? Like how WIN SPM has?

Thanks,

Well - if they have caller ID - I guess you could hook a computer up to the SMDR port and get an online run of calls to the system - especially after hours - that might give you some clues. But, if you have a culprit who is careful - he would probably block caller ID. There is no log available - that I know of - in the voice mail. What version of Messaging is it? If it's an R2.5 or R3 - you can get it upgraded to R4 - which - as Merlinman stated - has an much more complicated and as yet "unknown" backdoor.
