I have a 4 port Merlin Mail Release 3 (the type that hangs on the wall). It has worked beautifully for three years. It has now started calling the operator position from ports 1 and 2; and leaving a message that just has a ringback in it. I disconnected ALL FOUR of the connections to the port (those running from the VMI ports of my Legend release 7) and powered the unit up. After the unit fully powers up, ports 1 and 2 contstantly blink red/green/red/green/pause/repeat..., as if they are in use. Then port 4 will blink (to turn on the message waiting light of the operator position). Remember, the only thing connected to this unit is the power cord, so the legend is not sending calls to the ports.

I have changed the DIP switch settings on the two boards and swapped them, ports 1 & 2 for the board from ports 3 & 4. The problem REMAINS with ports 1 & 2. I'm baffled here and have no idea what to think. I had ports 1 & 2 set up as automated attendants, with ports 3 & 4 set up as voicemail ports. I switched it to all four voicemail ports and the problem still exists. Overall, the unit still works fine, it answers calls, takes messages, etc... It's just the the operator is often receiving phantom calls from the merlin mail system and the mailbox fills up. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I would love to have it repaired if possible and affordable. I have never hooked up a PC to the serial port nor run any diagnostics. Thank you in advance for your help.

Sounds like you may have a problem with some corrupted software on the hard drive or maybe the drive is going bad (assuming you don't have a programming issue). You could log in through the serial port and run some hardware tests. There is a "port card" test you can run - as well as a "hard drive" test. At least you would know if there is a problem with the port cards - but I suspect not. Unfortunately, if you replace the drive - you have to reprogram the system from scratch.

Thank you for the reply. It seems that I was mistaken, the problem does seem to have moved with the 2-port board. It took a couple of hours for the problem to manifest itself. So, that being said, I have removed the board that I think is defective and I now have a 2-port merlin mail system (pretty inconvenient, with message waiting lights being lit and message notification going to my pager). It is in place now and only been running for about 1 hour. If this system seems to be stable now. It looks like I'll need a 2-port board. I think I'll let it run for a week or so as a 2 port system to make sure that everything else is OK. Thank you for your update and information. I appreciate it.

Merlin Mail, Release 3. Two port card Brooktrout # 360-030-00

Well - let it run for a good week - and see what happens. If you need assistance - let me know.

Does anybody have a source for an affordable, used 2-port card for the merlin mail release 3 system (I prefer rev F), as described in the above postings? I have determined that the 2-port card is bad. The system is running perfectly as a 2-port system, with the bad card removed. Thanks & Happy New Year.

You can use any vintage card - as long as it is working (including the older, extra long ones). I believe you can use any similar Partner card as well. You can contact me directly as previously described.
