Hi All: I normally work on Nortel and Mitel systems, but I was asked to do an upgrade from an Avaya Legend to Avaya Magix.

Current System: Legend - w/ CO and station cards in Plastic Legent Carrier. using Octel Voice Mail

New System: Magix 4.0 with Merlin MEssaging - using old carriers and cards from current system with the addition of a 024TDL card.

HELP! Where can I get an installation manual for this by Monday morning? I need some basics...

1. DO I just replace the processor in the old clam shell and install it, and add the new merlin messaging and 024TDL card to what is already existing?

2. Can I keep all the current programming from the Legend and move it to the Magix?

3. What is the wiring diagram for the 024TDL 25 pair cable and what extentions would those be?

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

You get the manuals from
You need WinSPM software to download the current translations, convert them to the new release, and upload them to the new processor.

The TDL stations are single pair, so the stations are on pairs 1-24 of the Amphenol cable.

The extensions depend on where the card is in the system and what other cards are in front of it. Basically, it will pick up from where the last one ended.

Now, no offense, with no experience in Legend or Magix, I don't really think that you or anyone else can just step in and do this type of upgrade. Try to get the help of a local installer experienced in the system, and work with them to see what is going on.

Thank you for your help and no offense taken.. But I'm not sure if you've ever been to Maui Hawaii --- lol.. but there are no local installers... I'm the only tech on this island. If you want to move here I have an extra room and would welcome your assistance :)

One thing that the customer may want to keep in mind is that Avaya is going to be discontinuing the Merlin Magix platform at the beginning of April.

Avaya will support the platform for several years out, but once the supply of new parts is depleted, the only parts left will be refurbished/repaired. (There is alot of Magix hardware out there so parts should be available for a long time to come).

Avaya is hoping that current Magix users will migrate over to the IP platform.

I was hoping the same thing... IP OFfice is awesome.. just got back from my certification. But this customer (a huge government contract) wans to use Magix -- knowing that they are being discontinued... I have no idea why they are doing this -- I think it is because our sales people in Honolulu failed to mention that to them :( While Magix is a great system.. it is time to move forward with IP - that would have made this an easier install..

My advice is to Download WINSPM R4 to 5 Upgrade from Avaya.com, it is really a complete version, not an upgrade.

Then upgrade that with each and every upgrade beyond that until you have WINSPM R9.0.

Then, using that, back up the existing system to your PC/Laptop.

Then, put the MAGIX 4.0 Processor in the Existing system, BUT DO NOT PUT THE 024 Module in yet.

In fact, it would be best to partially remove all other modules.

Like This:

Release the Latch on the Bottom and pull them far enough out of their Carrier that they are not "plugged in".

Place something non-conductive between them and the connector to prevent them from sliding back in while you do the next step.

Now, Convert your OLD TRANSLATIONS to R4.0.

Then connect the PC/Laptop to the ADMIN PORT on the 4.0 and RESTORE the CONVERTED File.

At this time yhou can plug in all of the existing modules and ADD teh 024 at the far right.

LET ME WARN YOU THOUGH, DO NOT REPLACE ANY MODULES WITH THE 024. DOING SO WILL REALLY CAUSE PROBLEMS.

It must be installed TO THE RIGHT of everything else.

Good Luck!

OK - if you need help as you do this - we are here. It would help if you can post an inventory of the existing system. Have the customer go to their operator/programming phone (MLX-20L), have them press menu, maintenance, system, inventory. The first screen will show the processor type and software release (have them write the info down), have them press "more" - the system will show the next module's info, have them do so until they have the info for all installed modules. Post that information here. By the way - if they bought a Magix processor for their Legend - they need to have bought it WITH the Legend clamshell - it is a special one for the Magix processor only. They also need to have done the same for the 024 TDL - a different Legend clamshell housing. If not - then there is nothing you will be able to do - until they get those two different clamshells.

I am suprised one of you guys did not jump at the invite for some free room and board in Maui Hawaii. Work a day or so, show her a few things about the Merlin/magix, catch some rays. Have a drink on the beach. If what she says is right about being the only tech on the island, maybe, never come back, lol.
Nortelphonegirl,
I would have tried to add something, but these guys are good, and they have got you covered, so it is just smart aleck comments on my part. Besides that, they are way better than I am on the Merlin/Magix. I just read here to learn, stick around they can teach you alot.

You do not always get what you pay for, but you never get what you do not pay for.
