We have a Merlin Magix. We presently have a long distance PRI from AT&T. We are looking to have Local PRI service from AT&T on a T-1 that we have physically installed but not running. I believe that we have what is referred to as Custom for the Long Distance, as opposed to National 1 and National 2. My questions are do we have to have Custom because of the Merlin Magix and what is the difference in all three. I am thinking that if we have Custom now, we will need Custom for the Local. The AT&T people that we are talking to have no clue. Scary. TIA for any help.

Ideally a PRI service should be configured as 5ESS for the switch type - and AT&T Custom for the protocol.

It will also work with a DMS 100 switch type and NI-1 protocol (in most cases).

It will NOT work with NI-2 protocol - regardless of switch type.

I don't see why the original T1/PRI service can't be changed by AT&T to cover BOTH local and long distance calls.

The Legend/Magix switches only support the AT&T CUSTOM protocol for PRI service regardless of the CO switch and the two have to match or service does not work.

The major difference between protocols is:

AT&T CUSTOM: CID number only
NI1: CID number only & other features
NI2 CID number & name, call transfer, other features

I don't have my other reference available at the moment to verify these, so any corrections appreciated.

sysuest: I have many Legend systems with T1/PRI service - running just fine on DMS100, NI-1 protocol. There are quite a few providers who do not have the 5ESS, AT&T Custom protocol option available anymore.
