I'm an IT guy that knows very little about PBX. I manage the LAN of an office and they want me to try and figure out their PBX system.

Problem:

1. The way the system works now...people call the main # and the operator directs them to the appropriate extension. Some important people have direct #'s. I need to set up one of the extensions to be able to be accessed directly from the outside. How do I do this?

2. One of the extensions was cut somewhere in the walls. I need to run a new drop. I know how to terminate telephone cable but that's about it. Where do I terminate this new line into the Merlin Mail system?

FYI: Looking at the phone bill from AT&T, they have multiple lines, an ISDN B-Channell; (qty=15), PRI Tel Number (44).

I will attempt to help, based on my understanding of your issues.

1) With PRI, the Direct Inward Dial Number that is called needs to MATCH or be ROUTED to an EXTENSION. (If the PRI is set up that way) - Hard to tell w/o dialing into the system.

2) Nothing is WIRED to the MERLIN MAIL System. Only the LEGEND or MAGIX system has EXTENSION PORTS.

To know the answer to that question, you need to know the EXTENSION NUMBER INVOLVED and how your EXTENSION PORTS are NUMBERED.

If you have WINSPM, you can determine these things, but if you don't you will need some assistance from someone in a forum like this one.

Thanks for you help. I really appreciate it.

1. Do I get a list of Direct Inward Dial numbers from the phone company (AT&T)?

2. We don't have Winspm...but I'm going to try and download it from the site....from what I can see, this is PC based software. How do I connect the PC to the Merlin?

You need to connect to a SERIAL PORT on the PC with a 355 Adapter and an RJ45 Cable to the ADMIN PORT in the Legend.

Usually a 9 Pin to 25 Pin adapter is required as well, because the 355 Adapter is 26 Pin and most serial ports are now only 9 Pin.

Thanks MM. Do you think a Cisco console cable will work (used to configure cisco routers)? One end connects to the 9 Pin Serial Port and the other end is a RJ45 connector.

I do not know the PIN OUTS of that cable, but it's worth a try.

I fully recommend the 355 Adapter because it has some protection. However, if you know the PIN OUTS you can compare them to a drawing of the 355 available at this thread: 979382.

A Cisco console cable is NOT the same pinout.

Click on the FAQ's link at the top of this page, and you will find a couple of articles on making your own 355 or converting an ethernet cable to do the same.

A long time back, someone posted the sequence to cut off the end of a Cicso cable, and recrimp a plug for Legend use. Don't know if a search of the forum will dredge it up.

ok...i'm able to log into the system with WinSPM....I still can't figure out how to route a particular DID to a particular extension...any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Give us an example of a DID number and the extension number that it rings at.

Now that you have SPM access, pull a PRI report, and an extension list and post them here.

and example of a DID number is 770-872-1396 which i want to ring at extension 1396.

How do I pull a PRI report and extension list. If I click system inventory and then the slot #...it gives me a list of extensions and associated ports...is that what you're referring to?

This is what I found under "labeling"

This is an update on where I am. The one particular extension in question (1396) works fine within the office. If you dial the # from outside the office (xxx-872-1396), the following message plays, "the number you have reached is not in service. This is a recording".

Below are two extension printouts. One is for the trouble ext. 1396 and the other is for an extension that works fine. Any help would be appreciated.

The first thing you need to do is identify the DID block of numbers AT&T has assigned to the client's PRI service. You can get this info from the CSR for the PRI service, provided one is sent to the client yearly in the BellSouth AT&T region, or call the business office and have the account manager or service rep provide that information to you.

Once you have the DID numbers, then you can inventory them against the Station Directory list from the Legend to find what numbers are available for assignment to stations. Then you can make the number change by renumbering the station to the DID number you find available.

Lastly, if you need documentation, it is available for the download from support.avaya.com it is all there on Avaya's website.

....JIM....

ok thanks...i'll look for documentation...i have the list of DID numbers..i just need to figure out how to tie it to the extension. I can dial the complete number from w/in the office and it works fine. the problem occurs when I dial from outside. the number is xxx-872-1396 and the extension is 1396.

When the extension number matches the digits being sent by the phone company, the call routes automatically.

In your PRI Dial Plan Routing Table, there is only one exception, when you receive the digits 0436, the call is sent to ext. 5489.

Are you sure that (xxx-872-1396) is a valid DID number in your block? Because if it is, the telco should be sending you the last 4 digits, which would make the call ring at Ext. 1396 without you needing to do anything.

And I see in your other thread, that the phone company is sending 7 digits (why the inconsistanty?) So you need to follow Merlinman's advice to create a 2nd table the strip off the first 3 digits, to give you the 1396.

Thanks Tommy.

I'm sure the number is a valid DID. I had the service provider check to make sure everything on their end was ok with the specific PRI.

I would not be surprised if the phone company gave me wrong information in regards to how many digits they are sending. The first person I talked to said 10 but she sounded like she was not sure and not really knowledgeable. I had her transfer me to a tech and he originally said 3. I called him back to ask him which specific three digits and he said...sorry..no...it's actually 7 (every PRI number we have does not have the same three digits after the area code so I'm thinking this may be the reason they send 7 instead of just the last 4?).

Please reply to my new thread I created (named: Can't dial extension from outside using DID (Merlin Legend)) because some people were having problems posting
