We just acquired a customer with an R2.1 Legend with 2 cabinets - 1 MLX Card , 3 408 ATL Cards, 1 400 Card & 1 012 Card and approximately 10 users. They are experiencing intermittent hum on numerous sets as well as occasional dropping of calls - original vendor had ground wires daisy chained whcih we are chaning right now - any other thoughts???

Is this phenomenon reserved to a particular group of phones, esp. phones associated with a specific Merlin board? When there's some downtime you can busy out the cards and perform testing.

Be sure the lines have unique labels, not just "outside". When they experience hum and dropped calls, have them track which line they were on at the time. Possibly pinpoint it a particular line or group of lines. If it turns out to be several, but all on the same card, then you can roll the lines, keeping track of what went where, and relabeling them, and then track to see if the problem is isolated to the particular lines or card that they connect to.

Don't make too many changes at once, or you won't be able to track how the trouble follows.

I know why the lines hum.......

It's because they don't know the words.......

But seriously folks, TTT is Absolutely right on. Get the users to tell you what line(s) are failing by having them uniquely labeled.

That's the only way to get a start on this.

You can also get on the lines ahead of the system to do some isolation as well.

I would DOUBT that the trouble is in the Legend.

(Not impossible, but not very likely either.)

The labeled lines idea is good. Wish that my company's sites had more display phones. Most of the sets aren't display so most of the time I have to plug in the old laptop and leave SMDR rolling. Wait for the heads-up about another incident and check into it. But then again I love fishin' so it's analogous I suppose.

If you do have a lot of display phones and take their good advice please update us as to what's going on. Personally I wouldn't think that this type of behavior would be at the Merlin either. What type of lines are the incoming lines brought in by telco?

Given the age of the processor....look at the power supplies...they will cause a humming sound and upgrading
wouldn't hurt.
