I am trying to set up a Merlin Legend R7 CKE3. For some reason when I insert the 012 Basic Telephone Module cards, I cannot get dialtone. I have two of them and neither of them are providing dialtone. If I hook an analog set into one of the modules, I hear clicking and then dead air. If I call the extension it is connected to, the phone doesn't ring but when I pick up, the call connects. However, no sound is transparent between the two telephones. Any ideas? I find it hard to believe that I may have two bad 012 cards. I have also tried to factory reset the processor and swap slots on my carrier to no avail. HELP! Thanks.

Some of the early 012 cards do not have a ring generator in them. You most likely have to use a power supply that a ring gen was added to. You may see a little ring gen sticker on one of the power cards, and if you do you can swap that power supply into the carrier that holds the 012 cards other wise you will either need to get a ring gen and put it in your P.S. or you can buy a P.S. that already has in it, or you can buy an "012 with Ring Gen." or you can buy 016 cards

Would that account for no dialtone for any devices connected to the 012? I perceived the no ringing and no dialtone as two separate issues, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

If your system is in key mode, the default setting is that single line sets have no outside dialtone assigned to them. When you go into boards at the main menu of SPM and press inspect, what kind of card does it show the 012 to be? It could be that both your problems are that the wrong board is programmed into memory for that slot. You can also print a system setup report to check what is assigned to that slot.

i belive you may need to do board renumber to make the system recognize the new added cards .

Button 0 & 1 are programmed as "System Access". I've tried the system in both Key-mode and Key/Hybrid-mode with the same problem. The system correctly recognizes the 012 cards with their respective vintages. I've attempted the following to no avail:

1. System renumber via WinSPM
2. Factory default clear via MLX-20L
3. Factory default clear by jumper method on Legend processor card.

HELP!

You definately need a ring generator to make the stations ring. Add on into power supply. Can get for around $30 on the aftermarket. Do you get any tone when handset is lifted? Like maybe intercom/inside tone? Program the station ports on the 012 units for auto line select. That should clear tings up. Also if you have not performed a board renumber, do so!

Still no luck. I put in a 016 w/ Ring Generator but I still can't get dialtone when picking up the phone (analog set). When I call the extensions, they all ring busy. Every extension associated with the 16 ports ring busy. Am I forgetting something obvious? HELP!

You won't get a 016 to work on a CKE3 processor. Re-install the 012, do a board re-number as stated earlier. Then go under maintenance and do an inventory to see if the board is recognized. You could have a faulty processor as well. I just dealt with one the other day, that no matter what type of card I put in the first slot, system erase and all, it always say a 012. Is the slot your using in the first cabinet?

The system recognized the card as a 016TRR but it always rings busy. I tried the 012 but I still don't get dialtone. Any other ideas? Could it still be possible that I have a bad processor and the problem is only isolated to tip/ring ports? Thanks, Andy.

I put in a Legend CKE4 R6.0 processor today and still no dialtone and won't ring. I've swapped literally all components out. Has anybody had similar experiences with a bad power supply or slot carrier? Those are the only two components I haven't swapped out yet. HELP!

hey agpham,

Sometimes it might not be the actual card, but another card in the system causing the corruption. You already did the normal steps. I would try this,First, do a backup, flash and file.Next, remove all cards except for a mlx or tdl card(408mlx;008mlx;412tdl;024tdl) then add the 016 card, now do a boardrenumber. If the card works, then you know it isn't the processor, backplain, or card. If it doesn't, you can pretty much assume it is either corruption between the 016 and processor or the card itself. Considering that you already replaced the processor, I can rule that out. If the card does work, restore it back to the original config, and start removing cards. it is worth a shot.

I tried doing both cold and warm factory resets and isolated every single card. Still same problem. Do I need to reflash the firmware on each processor and card again with an upgrade card? What is the extent of corruption? Could corruption cause firmware damage?

had trouble 2 times, once on an upgrade, once on an add ,both times were the carrier

I resolved the issue. It was a bad 391C1 power supply. We were only getting 1.6V on the 5V supply. I swapped it out with a known good and everything is working. In addition, I was only getting 36V on the -48V supply. It is very tricky as all my MLX sets were working, especially ISDN still working in conditions under 48V. Thanks for all your help everyone!
