Hi- I've got a Merlin 820 FP2 that when you answer any ringing line, the ringing does not stop immediately. Instead you get a loud noise from the ring voltage going on for a second or two to complete the final ring, then all is well. This started happening on all 8 lines recently after they installed a T1 channel bank. Don't know if there is any connection to the new channel bank. Any ideas? Is this 820 toast? BTW I connected a Merlin Plus to the lines and it works fine.

I suggest you test ahead of the 820 with a test set or a regular 2500 set.

I would bet the chanell bank is what's doing this to you.

Well it is strange. I did check with the test set before I tried the Merlin Plus, and it was fine on both, as soon as I answered an incoming call the ringing was interrupted. Put it back on the Merlin 820 and it's like the channel bank doesn't stop ringing the line for a few seconds after you answer.

Now we are talking termination impedence, or something like that.

First, reverse the T&R going to the 820 and see if that helps. (I have seen some things which you would normally NOT consider to be polarity sensitive to be so....)

If not, use a miliampmeter in series with one side of the line with (A) your test set and/or a 2500 set and (B) the 820.

You can also use an ohmmeter to see what kind of termination the 820 gives as opposed to the 2500 set.

I really believe you will find a difference in the two (in both instances).

What you are looking for is "what does the channel bank consider a PROPER termination, and what is the 820 providing?".

Merlin has always considered 25 Mils a loop, but some vendors try to give less, some more.
